Watford Finescale Extravaganza Model Railway Exhibition

 17th-18th November 2007

Last weekend was the 16th Watford Finescale Extravaganza Model Railway Exhibition, and the first in our new venue at Queen’s School in Bushey. The new venue proved a huge success with everything under one roof and much better parking. Before opening we had a queue of over 200 people patiently waiting in the cold to get in.

As well as a new venue, this year’s show has been organised by the grandly titled “Extravaganza Project Management Team”, as Philip McGovern, who has successfully organised the Extravaganza since 1995, has decided to take a well earned rest from organising any more shows. It is a reflection of all the hard work that Philip put in, that it has taken a team of three people to put on this show, and the club gratefully acknowledges all the hard work Philip has put in over all these years. In recognition of this, the chairman of the club, Geoff Lines, made a presentation of a painting of North Woolwich station in GER days. Philip has been heavily involved with the Great Eastern Society, and had arranged for club members to visit the Great Eastern museum which is located in the old station building at North Woolwich.

The original concept of the Watford Finescale Extravaganza was devised by Martin Brent in 1991. He used to be the Assistant Town Clerk at Watford Town Hall before he moved to Herefordshire. His vision was to make a “finescale” show to attract the best layouts and supporting trade for the active modeller, rather than just another model railway exhibition. In this we have succeeded, and the Extravaganza has an enviable record as one of the best shows in the South East.

The feedback from visitors found our choice of layouts truly inspirational, and that our trade stands were able satisfy all the modelling needs of our visitors, most of whom were active railway modellers. Our ladies had baked the best home made cakes on the exhibition circuit, which were very popular with our visitors.

The club is grateful to all those who visited the exhibition, to the exhibitors who brought their layouts and to the traders who support us. We would also like to thank all the club members for putting on the show, their wives for catering and putting up with our hobby, friends of the club for assisting with stewarding, the staff of Queen’s School for all their help,

The date for next year has yet to be decided as November 2008 is getting busier with other exhibitions.
